Accessible transportation options in London

London offers a number of transportation options for residents and visitors with disabilities. Here are a few links for you to find more information.

About universal design

What is universal design? - A working group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers collaborated to establish principles of "universal design." Rather than focusing on a particular disability, universal design focuses on making all environments, products and services accessible to all people. The seven principles developed guide a wide range of design disciplines and may be applied to evaluate existing designs, guide the design process and educate both designers and consumers about the characteristics of more usable products and environments.

Designing a more usable world - for all - The Trace Research & Development Center, founded in 1971, is a pioneer in the field of technology and disability. The Centre's mission statement is:

"To prevent the barriers and capitalize on the opportunities presented by current and emerging information and telecommunication technologies, in order to create a world that is as accessible and usable as possible for as many people as possible."

City of London Facility Accessibility Design Standards - Going beyond existing regulations, standards and guidelines that address the needs of individuals with disabilities, the City's standards incorporate "universal design" principles that benefit people of all ages and abilities. Implementation of the design standards will make newly constructed and/or renovated City of London facilities, lands and services accessible to people with physical and sensory disabilities.

Making business premises accessible
for customers and employees

The Ministry of Community and Social Services website provides excellent information on how a workplace can be made accessible to everyone. Many of the steps that make your business premises more accessible involve minimum effort and expense. Considerations include entrance to the building, reception and meeting areas, elevators and stairs, washrooms, signs and communication material, and workspace areas and equipment.

Another helpful resource is the Ontario government's Directory for Accessibility which includes listings for:
